Inaugural Department Newsletter—Message from the Department Head

Hello everyone!

This has been on my list of things to do for a while, and became re-energized for the task after the Strategic Engagement Retreat in September where one of the clear messages was that as a department we don’t know each other very well!

I have finished my first year as Department Head, and I have to say a year of great learning and way too much time spent on following the money trail. It has been a challenging year for the department financially due to unexpected pressures such as the Therapeutics Initiative losing its funding and endowment funds continuing to per-form poorly.

The good news is that on October 22nd it was announced that TI funding was being re-stored.

We also have received another small endowment from the family of Jean Hugill, to support the Hugill Research Centre’s work. Our current Hugill Chair, Dr. Bernie MacLeod, has pretty much single-handedly supported research needs of the centre including paying student stipends. The new funds will provide some support for the new chair that we need to find, as Bern is retiring July 2014.

The Autonomic Pharmacology Workshops hold on November 13 for the first year Med students was again a great success. Kudos to all those who facilitated sessions.

Dr. Jim Kim organized another very successful GPA Conference on November 1/2. We are looking forward to another excellent program at the Whistler Anesthesia Summit in February.

I’ll take this opportunity to wish you all well over the holidays; enjoy family and friends and some time off I hope!

-Roanne Preston
