Victoria Baronas awarded a 2016 Vanier scholarship

Victoria Baronas, an MD/PhD student in our department, was recently awarded a 2016 Vanier scholarship. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is a prestigious award for doctoral candidates who exhibit outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and research potential. She also received the highest ranked submission (nationwide) in the CIHR CGS-D doctoral award competition. Victoria graduated from our undergraduate honours program (and co-op) in 2013, and was admitted to UBC medical school and the UBC MD/PhD program. She is investigating a novel regulatory mechanism of a neuronal voltage-gated potassium channel involved in epilepsy. Her research project is supervised by Harley Kurata and Filip Van Petegem (UBC Biochemistry). Congratulations to Victoria for these well-deserved accomplishments!
