The UBC Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics is delighted to announce the 2016/17 annual Dr. Jean Templeton Hugill Visiting Professor Lecture, which will be presented on Wednesday, April 26 at 18:00 at Vancouver General Hospital, Jimmy Pattison Pavilion, Third Floor, Room JPPN 3414 (910 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC). A reception with light refreshments will be held prior to the lecture at 5:30 pm (JPPN 3151).
This year, we are honoured to have Dr. Gregory L. Bryson from the University of Ottawa as our Dr. Jean Templeton Hugill Visiting Professor.
The title of Dr. Bryson’s lecture will be
“FROM CLINICAL OBSERVATION TO PUBLICATION: THE CHANGING WORLD OF SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATION”
Dr. Bryson is Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Research at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia. An Associate Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Dr. Bryson’s research agenda includes the rational use of preoperative testing and care of the ageing surgical patient.

Professor Guy Dumont of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who has extensive research collaborations with our department, has just been awarded the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation (Category 1).

Victoria Baronas, an MD/PhD student in our department, was recently awarded a 2016 Vanier scholarship. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is a prestigious award for doctoral candidates who exhibit outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and research potential. She also received the highest ranked submission (nationwide) in the CIHR CGS-D doctoral award competition. Victoria graduated from our undergraduate honours program (and co-op) in 2013, and was admitted to UBC medical school and the UBC MD/PhD program. She is investigating a novel regulatory mechanism of a neuronal voltage-gated potassium channel involved in epilepsy. Her research project is supervised by Harley Kurata and Filip Van Petegem (UBC Biochemistry). Congratulations to Victoria for these well-deserved accomplishments!

In “Building the Future,” we articulate the commitments, principles, goals and objectives that will propel us forward during the next five years. Each has been shaped through consultation with you, as well as our colleagues and partners.
