Matthias Görges Receives Partner Appointment in APT

We are very pleased to share news about a new faculty member, our first Partner Appointment in the Department:
I would like to congratulate Matthias Görges on his appointment as Assistant Professor (Partner) in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at UBC. Matthias is a biomedical engineer with extensive clinical research experience. He is a Scientist at the Research Institute, BC Children’s Hospital, where he co-leads the Clinical & Community Data, Analytics & Informatics group. He has collaborated with a number of the researchers in the Department and undertakes research in an inter-disciplinary team of engineers, computer scientists, and health care providers, where he leads a wide range of projects focusing on the development and application of new technologies primarily in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care. His research interests are patient monitoring alarms, medical displays, decision support systems, mobile health applications, and data integration/communication platforms. Matthias’ goal is to extract clinically-useful information from vital signs and other clinical data, and to transform these data into information for better, more timely, and more efficient decision-making by clinicians.

Dr. Donald Griesdale and his team make dramatic improvements in patient care

One of our fine researchers has made the news on his research endeavours:

Dr. Don Griesdale, an Assistant Professor and practicing anesthesiologist at Vancouver Acute and Intensivist at VGH has, with his team, made a rapid transition from new discovery to dramatic improvements in patient care.

Two B.Sc. Pharmacology students have been awarded The Wesbrook Scholarship

The Wesbrook Scholarship, UBC’s most prestigious undergraduate award.

Each year, a total of 20 Westbrook scholarships are awarded to senior undergraduate students (from various faculties, e.g., Science, Arts, Medicine, Applied Science, Education and Law) with outstanding academic performance, leadership, and involvement in student and community activities.

Pharmacology students who won Wesbrook and Premier Undergraduate Scholarships (2015-6):

Farnaz Javadian

Third year Pharmacology student Farnaz Javadian was recently awarded both the Wesbrook and the HSBC Emerging Leader Scholarships. Farnaz has contributed extensively to the UBC community as an ambassador for student leadership and social change. She has helped create an opportunity for hundreds of undergraduates to learn more about a career in healthcare directly from health professionals as the Director of UBC iKonnect, an annual charitable healthcare networking event. As part of this event, she has raised thousands of dollars for charities such as HOPE International, Covenant House Vancouver and the Reading Bear Society. Farnaz is also a UBC SCI Team student leader, the Vice President Communications of the UBC Women in Science Club and an Orientations Leader. As a provincial medallist in artistic gymnastics, Farnaz is passionate about promoting physical fitness in youth and she currently volunteers as a Gymnastics Canada certified coach for Special Olympics BC. In addition, she has developed a clinical research profile at St. Paul’s Hospital and was awarded a Surgical Quality Action Network summer studentship at BC Children’s Hospital. In her free time, Farnaz enjoys playing the piano and has completed the Grade 9 Royal Conservatory of Music Piano Program with Honours.

Cody Lo

Fourth year B.Sc. Pharmacology student, Cody Lo, has been awarded the Wesbrook Scholar Award as well as the Carl Bradford Robertson Premier scholarship. Throughout his undergraduate degree, Cody worked in five academic labs and is currently a co-author on multiple peer-reviewed publications. He is a two-time winner of the NextGen Voices essay competition in the journal Science. Additionally, he was twice placed 1st in the UBC Science Case Competition and has won multiple awards for his research presentations. Cody has given back extensively to the undergraduate research community at UBC; he recently co-founded and is currently the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Undergraduate Research. He is also the Vice President of two student led clubs: “Undergraduate Research Opportunities” and “UBC Project PATHS”. Cody is currently the Finance Team Lead on the organizing committee for the UBC Global Health Conference this year. In his free-time, Cody volunteers to promote health literacy amongst marginalized populations such as those with infectious disease from the downtown eastside.

10th Annual APT Research Day – May 12th, 2016

He has developed integrative whole animal models to study the adaptive physiological responses to acute hemodilution in wildtype and transgenic animals.

Research Day, Scientific Sessions & Cocktail: Thursday May 12, 2016 at VGH Paetzold Auditorium.

Registration & Abstract Deadline: Monday March 23, 2016
