Title: “Chronic Pain Network”

Dr. Norm Buckley (Biosketch)
Professor Emeritus Department of Anesthesia, Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University

Objectives:

1. Appreciate the process of healthcare policy advocacy by understanding the background of a successful research network funding application
2. Learn about an example of patient engagement in the research process through examination of a chronic disease network governance structure
3. Contribute to the discussion of planning opportunities for continuation of a chronic disease research network

Brief CV: A faculty member since 1988, Dr. Norm Buckley completed his third term as Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, McMaster University, Hamilton in September 2017. Prior to his appointment as Chair, Dr. Buckley also held hospital administrative positions as Operating Room Director, Chief of Anesthesia (Chedoke McMaster) and Deputy Chief (Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation). Dr. Buckley’s particular interests are pain, both acute and chronic. He was extensively involved in the development and organization of the acute post-operative pain service for adult and pediatric patients, and the pediatric sedation services, and was the Director of the Pain Management Centre at the Hamilton General Hospital from its opening in 2000 until 2014. His clinical work is focused on chronic pain management at the Michael G. DeGroote Pain Clinic, McMaster University Medical Centre. In 2010, Dr. Buckley established and is the director of the Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre. He is scientific director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care. The missions of these two units are to improve the management of pain through dissemination of best practice information; use persistent post- surgical pain to explore chronic pain, and provide unique learning opportunities. Dr. Buckley is the nominated principal applicant on a CIHR Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) initiative to develop a Canadian Chronic Pain Network. Project funding of $25M from 2016-2021 will focus on improved health outcomes for Canadians living with chronic pain.
