APT’s 20th ANNUAL RESEARCH DAY 2026
The APT Research Day is our annual event to showcase the Research excellence of fellows and trainees. We encourage presentations in all areas of scholarship, including research, quality improvement, education, and administration. We welcome scholarship that explores and seeks to inform Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. APT Research Day also hosts our annual Dr. Jean Templeton Hugill Memorial Lecture and the New Faculty Invited Lecturer. This year’s speakers are Dr. Evan Kharasch (Merel H. Harmel Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology – Duke University) and Dr. Jason Chui (New Faculty Invited Lecturer anesthesiologist, APT UBC and VGH).
The event will take place at Saint Paul’s Hospital – SPH LT 1477.

Dr. Kharasch received his MD and PhD in pharmacology from Northwestern University in Illinois and completed his training in anesthesiology at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he remained on faculty for 17 years, serving as vice chair for research and assistant dean for clinical research at the School of Medicine. He joined Washington University in St. Louis in 2005, where he was the Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden Professor of Anesthesiology, director of the Division of Clinical and Translational Research in the Department of Anesthesiology and the founding director of the Center for Clinical Pharmacology. He also held appointments in the Washington University Pain Center and Siteman Cancer Center. From 2009 to 2014, Dr. Kharasch served as the vice chancellor for research, where he oversaw one of the largest academic biomedical research enterprises in the nation and led a university-wide initiative in research and entrepreneurship, aimed at expanding the university’s culture in research commercialization.
Dr. Jason Chui is an anesthesiologist at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital. He recently relocated to Vancouver and previously served as Associate Professor at the University of Western Ontario. He completed his medical training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, followed anesthesiology residency training through the Colleges of Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. He pursued subspecialty fellowships in Neuroanesthesia at Toronto Western Hospital and in Cardiac Anesthesia and Critical Care at Toronto General Hospital, University of Toronto. He later earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dr. Chui is a recognized researcher and leader in neuroanesthesia. His research focuses on the clinical translation of advanced neuromonitoring technologies—including hyperspectral and broadband functional cerebral oximetry—and on clinical trials in perioperative neuroscience and neuroanesthesia. He has made substantial contributions to professional and academic societies, serving as the inaugural Scientific Chair of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Annual Meeting Committee, where he led a major reorganization of the meeting structure and introduced innovative, evidence-based educational strategies to strengthen scientific programming. He is also Past Chair of the CAS Neuroanesthesia Section and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology.
