The Anesthesiology Residency Program offers a comprehensive and high‑volume training experience within one of Canada’s largest anesthesiology programs. With 100 residents and 20 CaRMS entry positions each year, the program attracts applicants seeking strong clinical training, broad subspecialty exposure, and a supportive, academically grounded learning environment.
Residents train across a wide network of hospitals and health authorities in British Columbia, gaining experience in the full spectrum of perioperative care. The academic curriculum includes full‑day Academic Days, structured simulation training, and ongoing scholarly activities that support both clinical excellence and professional development. Subspecialty training opportunities continue to expand, with enhanced experiences in thoracic anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and other focused areas of practice.
The program also supports a growing number of international electives, with recent residents completing rotations in South Africa, Rwanda, and Hong Kong. These experiences broaden clinical perspectives and strengthen global health engagement.
A major upcoming initiative is the introduction of the Fraser Health Track in July 2027. This pathway will allow residents to complete a greater proportion of their training within a single region, supporting continuity, reducing travel demands, and strengthening relationships with local teaching sites while meeting all Royal College accreditation standards.
Re‑Entry Residency Pathway (PGY‑3)
In addition to CaRMS entry positions, the UBC Department of Anesthesiology offers two PGY‑3 re‑entry residency positions in Anesthesiology beginning July 1, 2026. These positions are intended for physicians returning to anesthesiology training and include a three‑year Return of Service (ROS) commitment, with anticipated placements within the Fraser Health Authority and Northern Health Authority. Further details, including the 2026 ROS contracts, are available through the Province of British Columbia. Applicants are encouraged to review the UBC Anesthesiology Re‑entry Policy (December 2025) for information on eligibility and program expectations.
