Department Head’s Message

Welcome to The University of British Columbia (UBC) Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics (APT) webpage. Unique amongst anesthesiology departments both within Canada and internationally, the Department encompasses an expansive but integrated mix of three inter-related disciplines of medicine: anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics. Within this structure, the Department administers one of the largest anesthesiology training programs in Canada with 100 residents enrolled in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited training program, in addition to 5 trainees in our Pain Medicine residency, 5 in our Family-Practice Anesthesia residency program, with more than 20 trainees across our various subspecialty fellowship programs.

With an array of distributive clinical teaching sites reaching across the province of British Columbia, one of our greatest strengths resides with our more than 600 clinical faculty members making it the largest anesthesiology teaching program in Canada. Our 26 academic faculty, in addition to supporting our anesthesiology and pain programs, administer our Pharmacology and Therapeutics educational and research programming that includes 60 pharmacology undergraduate students and 30 graduate students. Our therapeutics programming largely resides within the Therapeutics Initiative which was established in 1994 with a mission to provide physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, allied health professionals and the public with up-to-date, independent, evidence-based, practical information on healthcare interventions.

We welcome your interest in our Department and encourage you to explore all we have to offer in education and research in anesthesiology, pharmacology and therapeutics.
